What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a nonsurgical cosmetic skin procedure that can address a wide range of common skin concerns caused by age and sun damage.

Medical aesthetic microneedling is performed in a medical setting by a trained professional.

At Blue Spiral Medspa, we use the SkinPen, which is the world’s first FDA-cleared microneedling device.

This gives our patients several advantages over other microneedling treatments as the SkinPen utilizes single-use, sterile needle cartridges, and a custom-designed sheath to prevent cross-contamination.

Microneedling using SkinPen causes tiny, controlled micro-injuries that stimulate natural healing and promote regeneration, all without using heat or surgical incisions.

This results in a skillful renovation of scar tissue while preserving the skin’s overall structural integrity.

Microneedling - Collagen Induction Therapy

How Does Microneedling Work?

Microneedling creates tiny micro-injuries to activate the skin’s natural healing response and promote collagen and elastin production. It improves skin tone and texture while reducing the visibility of scars, acne, and wrinkles.

Benefits of Microneedling Treatment

Microneedling offers numerous benefits, including reducing acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and pore size while softening wrinkles, enhancing texture, and brightening and tightening the skin. By penetrating the skin and stimulating collagen production, microneedling helps minimize the appearance of scars and pores, and improves overall skin tone and texture. Additionally, it is minimally invasive with little to no downtime.

Before, During, and After

What To Expect Before a Microneedling Treatment

Before undergoing your microneedling procedure, you will have a consultation with one of our expert aestheticians to discuss your goals and answer any questions. We will create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. To reduce the risk of bleeding or bruising, avoid retinol or exfoliants for a few days, and refrain from certain supplements, alcohol, and aspirin.

What To Expect During a Microneedling Treatment

During your microneedling procedure, a small handheld device with fine needles will gently penetrate your skin. These tiny needles create micro-injuries that stimulate collagen and elastin production, resulting in smoother and tighter skin. Most people describe the sensation as a light prickly feeling.

What To Expect After a Microneedling Treatment

Following your Microneedling procedure, you might notice a slight sunburn-like redness or a rosy complexion, which usually subsides within 24 hours. Results often start to become visible between 1 to 6 weeks. It’s recommended to refrain from wearing makeup for around two days; however, you can continue with your regular activities the same day.

What does microneedling do?

Microneedling makes tiny pinpricks (or micro-injuries) to the skin surface with very fine needles. This may seem counterintuitive, but it is beneficial.

The precisely controlled injuries kickstart the skin’s natural healing response, which prompts the skin to make more collagen.

Collagen is an essential skin protein that gives the skin its smooth, supple, youthful appearance. With age, the amount of collagen in the skin falls sharply, giving the skin an aged appearance.

Microneedling is, therefore, a type of collagen induction therapy. It can give you smoother and firmer skin with a more even tone and texture. And it does so in a completely natural way without any chemicals, fillers, lasers, or surgery.

What skin problems can microneedling fix?

Microneedling can help improve skin imperfections such as fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, uneven tone, rough texture, acne scars, and sun spots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is microneedling painful?

The needles used in microneedling are ultra-fine, and there is typically minimal discomfort from the pinpricks. We use a topical anesthetic (numbing cream) to make the microneedling treatment even more comfortable for you. Most people tolerate microneedling extremely well.

What will my face look like after microneedling?

There can be some minor redness and irritation for 2-3 days after your microneedling treatment.  These are the most common side effects.  The needle pricks are microscopic and not visible to the naked eye.

You can use make-up to camouflage any redness post-treatment.  There is no real downtime, and you can return to all normal activities, including work, on the same day of your appointment.

Can you see results after one microneedling session?

You will see some improvement in your skin 1-2 weeks after your first microneedling session. However, most people need multiple sessions to get the best results. The number of microneedling treatments you will need will depend on the severity of your skin issues and your aesthetic goals. Our State-Licensed Medical Aesthetician, Tabatha Bourchier, LE, will discuss this with you during your initial consultation.

How long do microneedling results last?

Most people find that their microneedling results last for 3-5 months.  The results continue to improve in the weeks following the treatment as the skin makes more collagen.

Microneedling results are, therefore, long-lasting but not permanent because the skin continues to age with time.  A maintenance microneedling session every 6 months can help you maintain your results.

Who is Microneedling for?

Microneedling is for anyone wanting to improve their skin because it addresses so many common skin concerns caused by aging and sun damage.  Most people will notice improved skin quality and a brighter, more refreshed complexion after microneedling.  What’s more, the results are natural-looking and long-lasting.

Remember that microneedling is designed to treat mild to moderate wrinkles, tone and texture issues, superficial age spots, and minor scarring.  It is a minimally-invasive procedure with minimal to no downtime.  You should not expect the same results with microneedling as you would get with a facelift.  Remember, a facelift is a surgical procedure with very different goals and a long recovery period.

Overall, microneedling is a great option for individuals who want to avoid long recovery periods but get a treatment that changes the skin and reveals a smoother, brighter appearance.

Lastly, always choose a reputable medical practice with a licensed aesthetician for your microneedling treatment.  This will ensure safety, accuracy, and the expected results.
